Overcome Overwhelm: 5 Ways to Get Grounded Whilst Travelling

It’s inevitable that whilst you’re on the move, travelling to new places and experiencing new cultures, you’ll feel overwhelmed occasionally. Whether you’re suffering from culture-shock or homesickness, here are our five favourite ways to overcome overwhelm:

  1. Find a routine

Finding a routine seems to be the key to creating consistency. But how on earth do you do that when hopping through time zones and staying in unfamiliar places?

We both work remotely whilst travelling, so having some kind of routine really helps to create consistency and helps us to feel more ‘normal’. Try to get up and go to bed at the same time everyday. This will help you to reset your body clock, beat the jet lag and feel a bit more calm and grounded.

Maybe doing 10 minutes of yoga or stretching when you first wake up would suit you, or taking a walk around the block before bed. Help yourself to feel more ‘normal’ by creating normality and routine.

  1. Celebrate your senses

If you know me, you’ll know that I’m a big advocate for aromatherapy. I love to use Lavender essential oil before I go to sleep (and any other time of day, if I’m honest). Establishing a little routine of applying essential oils (correctly diluted!) to yourself, or your pillows etc, can help you to take a moment for yourself and re-establish a well-needed sense of calm.

  1. Make time for tea

It might be the Brit in me, but there is always time for tea when I’m around. Whether you’re a fan of black tea with milk, herbal tea or even iced tea, making time for a cup of something nourishing could help you to find balance again. Take a moment to stir your intention into your tea, pay attention to how it smells, how it tastes and how it makes your body feel. If you’re a fan of herbal tea, then choose one that appeals to what you need: Lemon and Ginger for some spicy reinvigoration, Peppermint for some soothing or maybe Chamomile for some relaxation.

  1. Call a loved one

Speaking to a loved one might just make you feel a little closer to home. I find that hearing a familiar and friendly voice on the end of the phone really helps me to feel less overwhelmed when I’m somewhere new. Generally, my family are excited about our adventures and it helps to put things into perspective; knowing that although we might be far away in distance, they’re still there rooting for us.

  1. Wash it away

Having a shower might seem like an overly simple thing to do, but washing away your overwhelm might actually work. Taking some time away from screens, a few moments of quiet to yourself might be just what you need to get a fresh perspective. Envision the water washing away your stress and tension and let the water soothe you. Put a few drops of essential oil on the floor of the shower (away from your feet and the direct stream of water) and let the fragrance transport you to a spa-like sense of tranquillity. Step out squeaky clean and refreshed!

We really hope that some of these tips might be helpful to you! Overwhelm is a part of life, wherever you are in the world, but there are so many things you can do to ease it. Let us know if you have any other tips or ticks, that you use to get grounded and overcome overwhelm!
